Hedy Fry Bill C-61 Calgary roundtable interview

Hon. Dr. Hedy Fry Bill C-61 Calgary roundtable

Hon. Dr. Hedy Fry came to Calgary for a Bill C-61 roundtable discussion yesterday (Aug 5th, 2008). Here is an audio interview (mp3) (streaming audio here) with Hedy the day after the roundtable.

Hedy wants see if Bill C-61 will do more harm than good. And whether the bill is fixable by amending it or if it needs to be re-written starting with consultations with the various stakeholders (including the consumers, industries, creators, librarians, et al.) It is also good to hear Hedy understands the need for flexible fair dealing.

As the Calgary Chapter of Fair Copyright for Canada is trying to organize meetings with our Calgary MPs to talk about our Bill C-61 concerns, I concluded my interview by asking Hedy for some advices.

Well, Hedy doesn’t think the current Conservative MPs are willing to listen to our concerns at all. Now, I honestly hope the Calgary Conservative MPs will prove Hedy wrong by agreeing to meet and listen to our concerns as I still harbour some faint hope for the democratic process to work.

Hedy is looking for your Bill C-61 feedback/comments/concerns. Please leave your comments here in this blog entry or contact Hedy Fry’s office directly.

  1. This is a great interview, and a very different Ms. Fry than what I had been hearing on CPAC or reading in hansard thus far. I hope that this isn’t just her being a politician, and that she is expanding her understanding of the impact of this direction on copyright.

I’ve met her in the past, and posted some notes in the Vancouver Center section of the DCC blog. http://www.digital-copyright.ca/edid/59029

About the meeting: I’m a Green, Hedy Fry is Blue, Nickie is a Space Cadet, lets hang out in the Tiki Bar

Thanks for your kind words Russell.

I truly hope Hedy will be able to convey the concerns and problems about C-61 raised by the Calgary roundtable participants.

Of course, I do realize the hazard of blindly trusting a politician’s words but I guess I am willing to “trust but verify” and see if Hedy and her Liberal colleagues will deliver on what they promise to do.

Good to meet you at the round table Kempton and thanks for posting the interview. I was pretty convinced by Hedy that she is determined to do what she can to significantly change or just quash this bill. I am also preparing some specific suggestions and sending them on to her as she requested.

It was nice to meet you as well Ian. It is important that we do what we can to get our concerns across to the elected politicians.
