//返工除了錄歌,就是聽歌,聽落好似好嘆。「其實好辛苦!日日返十幾個鐘頭工!唔使錄音的時候,都要不停聽啲日本歌、韓國歌,搵適合嘅做 cover(改編歌),又要打去搵啲 publishing company 問有冇歌可以畀我聽,日日係咁聽係咁聽」,Joseph 說枱面通常有過千隻歌等住佢聽,有時更要同其他監製爭歌,因為大家其實都係收緊同一份歌。不過,80 至 90 年代是仍有 in-house 監製的年代,一班寶麗金的監製也會和老闆坐埋一齊開會,討論哪一些歌該交給張學友,哪一些歌又較適合黎明,相當公道,也避免了「撞歌」的情況出現。[…]
Joseph 還說,歌曲能不能流行,有時也講緣份。就像關淑怡 1989 年的成名作〈難得有情人〉,本來是想找鄺美雲唱的,這首由盧東尼譜曲的作品,在 1987 年已經誕生。「當時未有歌詞,只有一個很簡單的編曲,但 Cally(鄺美雲洋名)聽完就唔係咁鍾意,話唔係好適合佢。」結果歌曲塵封兩年,直到關淑怡簽約寶麗金,推出第二張專輯時才再「出土」,新人當然不會 say no,甚麼歌都要唱,卻沒想到就一炮而紅,更橫掃了該年樂壇頒獎禮不少獎項,不知道鄺美雲有沒有後悔?「隻歌鄺美雲可能冇 feel,咁呢啲嘢冇得迫嘅,同埋當時用嘅話也唔一定係〈難得有情人〉呢份歌詞,呢個題材都係我後來同 Jolland(向雪懷)提議先至出現。」
提到關淑怡,Joseph 表現特別雀躍,因為是他一手「湊大」的。關淑怡的處女作《冬戀》(1989)到《eZONE》(1998),期間一共 13 張專輯(兩張國語專輯是他和台灣的林明陽共同製作)都由 Joseph 監製。「幾 enjoy 同佢錄音,佢係好有天份,唱歌好好聽。當你搵到一隻歌,然後隻歌好流行,又賣錢,令佢知名度提升,嗰個成功感係錢買唔到;而且佢係新人做起,啲人唔識佢,但最後做到個 style 出嚟,感覺係幾自豪。」[…]
Joseph 說,譚詠麟、關淑怡、徐小鳳這幾個歌手,都屬於「易做」,錄音時好嘆,一首歌唱第一次已經好好聽,不用多費唇舌,只要略作修正,便已達到很高的水平,譬如徐小鳳的經典〈婚紗背後〉,其實只錄了幾個 take,少到連小鳳姐都有點懷疑當時仍算是「新仔」的葉廣權,要錄到凌晨 4 點才肯「收口」,但結果用的還是前一晚 7 點錄的第一 take。「佢哋本身天份高,而且自己又有做功課,表現自然好。」他說音樂講感覺,有時吹毛求疵唱到個音好準,但個 feel 冇咗,都係冇用。[…]
科技的進步,令到加入樂壇的門檻低了,音不夠準就 tune 到準。所以 Joseph 在訪問初便說他經歷了所有起伏,包括錄音方式的演變。「以前係 analog 年代,而家係數碼錄音,基本上係無限 tracks,你想 100 條都得。當然有時咁多係多餘嘅,因為做 balance 會好麻煩,除非隻歌真係好複雜啦。」
他說自己入行的時候已有 16-track,基本上好夠用,除非有管弦樂,才需要想想怎處理。「所以又唔可以話好困難,multitrack,分開錄又得,一齊玩一齊錄又得,做好呢啲工序先唱歌,歌手聽住啲音樂錄,就係咁簡單。」他說 60 年代得兩條 track,一定要 live,後來發展到 4-track 就好玩好多,「George Martin(The Beatles 的錄音師)係一條 track 錄晒鼓同 bass,一條 track 就錄結他,另外一條 vocal,一條和音。如果唔夠用,就會將兩條 mix 落一條,咁就會騰空返一條 track 出嚟,所以理論上係可以將好多條 tracks 夾落一首歌,不過就要整得好好,因為兩條 track 去一條 track 梗有 loss,但 George Martin 啲 balance 就做得好出色。」[…]
Joseph 說當年 Lionel Richie 來港宣傳,有幸跟他吃過一頓飯,當時他就問對方,怎麼〈Stuck on You〉可以這麼好聽,究竟是怎錄出來。「佢話作嗰陣係一支結他,得個 melody,但錄嗰陣就搵咗 4 班唔同嘅 musician,喺唔同日子玩,最後先揀一個最好 feel 嘅出版。佢哋有咁嘅本錢,喺香港根本冇可能。」[…]
即使問他欣賞的監製,也是上一代的佔多。「我好欣賞 Michael(歐丁玉),佢揀嘅歌好有流行潛力,眼光好好。我就通常 twist 多啲,唔好等佢太一般。」他說新一代的較喜歡王雙駿、Eric Kwok,但都是 90 年代出道的了,他說更新的一班不太合他口味,無法令他聽下去。[…]
另外,他說近期最喜歡是西班牙音樂廠牌 Café del Mar 的出品,「呢個 label 我好鍾意,好多 idea 我都係喺佢哋啲音樂得嚟,好 chill-out,一隻歌可以融合好多感覺。佢哋好多係雜錦碟,會搵啲專玩 electronic 同 atmospheric 氣氛嘢嘅人,將流行曲 combine 埋,感覺好正。」他說盧冠廷《Beyond Imagination》內的〈但願人長久〉,新編曲的靈感便來自 Café del Mar 的音樂。
入行 30 多年,Joseph 說工作上沒有因此失去新鮮感,反而每次都好期待。「每次都會諗啲辦法令啲歌有新元素,點編、點製作、點樣令隻歌 hit,好好玩。」他說接著都會監製新的發燒碟,正傾談中但尚未落實的,有鍾鎮濤和葉蒨文。難怪他說現在都被標籤做發燒碟了,雖然在他的製作下,盧冠廷和陳慧嫻的翻唱專輯確實比其他同類型的發燒碟更勝一籌,音樂性也更強,但我還是更渴望聽到一張由他監製、全是新歌的唱片。//
