Obama confirms death of Osama bin Laden

Tonight, President Barack Obama confirmed the death of Osama bin Laden. [via WH and these tweets] Update: Also see WH full transcript.

For the families and friends of the dead on 9/11 and the many deaths in the ongoing war in Afghanistan, the death of bin Laden hopefully will bring them some closure. And I am thinking about the soliders (especially Canadian soliders) who have died or still fighting the war in Afghanistan.

Reports of this news (most with videos) from CBC, CTVCNN, ABCBBC, Guardian, MW.

Current (9:56pm MST) LIVE coverage: CBS.

With all the emotions welling up, I am actually speechless. I posted some of the photos I took at the Beechwood National Cemetery earlier this year on my blog.

This is definitely an important moment in history. At the same time, MW makes sense in stating, “Bin Laden’s death won’t end those wars. American foreign policy won’t be changed by his death the way it was by the deaths of those thousands who lost their lives on that day in September.

Although a great part of the world will celebrate his death with a sigh of relief mixed with the rush of revenge, the fact is that bin Laden had entered history long ago. His influence peaked on 9/11.”
