Bill Gates & Warren Buffett: What industry do you think is going to produce the next Bill Gates?

Friday, 20 November, 2009

From CNBC (transcript and video) (emphasis added),

QUESTION:  Hi.  My name is Katrina Gankena, and I was born in Russia.  And I’m a second-year student at Columbia Business School.  My question is for Mr. Gates.  What industry do you think is going to produce the next Bill Gates?  Because that’s the industry I want to get a job in. [LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE]

GATES:  Industries do have different paces of innovation.  So the IT industry, driven by the magic of software, the magic of the optic fiber, magic of the chip which doubles in power every couple of years, it’s been the industry that has not only been the most exciting, it’s also changed the rules for many other industries.  The idea of information being available, what the online world is like, that’s incredible.  I’ll tell you, there are a few other industries that will compete for being exciting in the decades ahead.  The energy business, some approach will provide cheaper energy that’s environmentally friendly.  And there’s a lot of science, a lot of business.  That’s a global thing.  There will be some great careers there.  Medicine, you know.  We haven’t solved Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s or about 20 diseases of these poor countries, and yet we can be sure that we’re on track to do that.  And so those three industries I think you would do great in.  There’s many others, but those are the ones that have the strongest appeal to me.

BUFFETTFind what turns you on.  Find what you have a passion for. If somebody said to me when I was getting out of Columbia, you know, that Bill’s business was going to be the one that would be exciting, you know, I don’t think I’d have done so well.  [LAUGHTER]  But I knew what turned me on.  I had a professor, Ben Graham, I offered to go to work for him for nothing.  He said, “You’re overpriced.”  Nonetheless, I went into the business. [APPLAUSE]  I will guarantee, you will do well at whatever turns you on.  There’s no question about that.  Don’t let anybody else tell you what to do.  You figure out what you are doing. [APPLAUSE]“

How Can We Help? by WINDMobile

WINDmobile would rather have its shops open and doing business already but, under the current circumstances, it is nice to see Canadian charities benefit from WINDmobile’s down time. Cool to see WINDmobile building some bridges and doing some Social Business. Good luck to people of the WIND.

By the way, here is the Calgary WIND group.

Malalai Joya – A Woman Among Warlords (CBC interview)

Thursday, 19 November, 2009

Have a listen to CBC The Current interview with Malalai Joya. I may not agree with each of Malalai’s suggestions but what she saw and experienced in Afghanistan is scary and we need to know.

Here are some info from The Current (emphasis added).

“Malalai Joya

Hamid Karzai was sworn in for another term as Afghanistan’s President this morning. This against the backdrop of explosive news here in Canada that in 2006 and 2007, senior government officials including the prime minister’s office and the defense ministry were told Afghan detainees taken by Canadian troops and handed to Afghan officials were subject to beatings and electric shocks.

This morning as Ottawa reels from news that could affect Canadian politics and it’s place in international law… a lone Afghan woman is making her way across to Canada arguing that our troops and all foreign forces should get out.

Malalai Joya was 27-years-old when she became the youngest person elected to the new Afghan Parliament. She’s now suspended from Parliament for criticizing other MPs and accusing many of being warlords and criminals. She calls Afghanistan’s democracy a farce and says her country’s liberation is a lie. She has written a book called A Woman Among Warlords. Malalai Joya was in Toronto.”

Dejero Labs – Powering Live Webcast of Olympic Torch Relay

Wednesday, 18 November, 2009

Dejero Labs

From CTV, “Groundbreaking technology powers Olympic Torch Cam“. Plus this video via @CTVOtorch, “Video from Canada AM : Alon Marcovici describes cutting edge technology for the live cam following the torch. http://bit.ly/4CzmwE

Based on what I understand at the moment, I think the smart people at Dejero Labs in Waterloo, Canada are doing some groundbreaking stuff. Take a look of these cool features.

I am trying to get more information from the Dejero Labs team and will add more neat info to this entry if I have things to add.

P.S. I’ve been attending the Banff World TV Festival (for broadcaster and producers) and NextMEDIA conferences since 2006. And I have always been on the lookout for cool technologies. Dejero Labs is really cool in my eyes.

P.P.S. For my blog entry about the Torch relay itself, see “Live Webcam @ Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay“.

Live Webcam @ Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay

2010/02/12 Update-2: CBC Report Olympic torch’s long journey at emotional end.
2010/02/12 Update-1: Video of Torch Relay in Stanley Park, Vancouver.
2010/02/09 Update: Video of Torch Relay in Richmond.

*** Special Notice ***

Special 2010/02/14 Update:

Now the Torch relay has completed, the Torch cam has finished its job. All things considered, the Torchcam has done a great job in its first ever operation. There are things to be improved but like any new groundbreaking inventions, there are always room for improvement.

***

CTV is doing a great job putting up a Live Webcam @ Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay with a Google map show where they are. You can also follow the Torch at Twitter. Check these out, quite cool. Got to see a bit of Canada and where the Torch is traveling.

I’ve blogged more about the live webcast technology in “Dejero Labs – Powering Live Webcast of Olympic Torch Relay“.

P.S. At the end of the day, it is not the about the Olympic flame. It is not about the Olympic Torch. It is not even about the famous Canadian stars and people carrying the Torch. It is about the lovely Canadian towns and cities that the Olympic Flame has traveled to. It is about the Canadian hearts and minds the Olympic spirit has touched. It is about us.

The following are pictures of some Olympic Torchbearers: John Ells, Rodney Helpard, Cia Tweel, Sarah Bryson, Sidney Crosby, and Mallory Sanford on a Zamboni. I’ve also included a video clip of Sidney.

Here is a video of our beloved Sidney Crosby running with the Olympic Torch. (sorry no audio).

CTV has a report with better picture, “Sidney Crosby runs with Olympic flame in Halifax“.

Note 1: The @CTVOtorch Live Webcam went down or became “temporarily unavailable” many times over the live broadcast, including moments during the Sidney Crosby coverage. Now, considering the complexity of this brand new technology, I think it did an admirable job.

Note 2: For the record, the following are some of the Twitter updates @CTVOtorch at the time of me writing this blog entry (the first picture captured at the top of this post) showing who are carrying the Torch and where the Torch is going next, etc. And the status in French too!

Meet cyberwoman, the battleground for the next election

Wednesday, 18 November, 2009

An excerpt from The Independent (UK), “Meet cyberwoman, the battleground for the next election“,

Tomorrow, David Cameron will spend an hour online answering questions put to him by users of the Mumsnet site. It will be his second guest appearance. The first worked out very well, because he appears to be equally at ease whether he is asked about policy or more personal matters such as his home life.

Gordon Brown, by contrast, does not handle personal questions comfortably, and endured days of ridicule after his Mumsnet experience, when he was unable to answer a question put to him a dozen times about what his favourite biscuit was.

CRTC chair scolds networks & cable carriers

CRTC Chair Konrad von Finckenstein at 2008 Banff World TV Festival

CRTC Chair Konrad von Finckenstein at 2008 Banff World TV Festival

From Inside The CBC (emphasis added),

At the packed hearings CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein often seemed exasperated with the approach from both sides. He pressed officials repeatedly on why the carriers and broadcasters couldn’t solve this issue themselves. “Why is it so difficult for you to sit down and negotiate?” he asked a Rogers official.

Von Finckenstein said he was very frustrated by the messy, public battle between the conventional broadcasters and the cable and satellite carriers, the likes of he had never seen before. “I have trouble realizing why we are in this mess.” He said broadcasters and carriers are in a “symbiotic relationship. There should be a symbiotic solution.”

Link: Canadian Telco Ownership Rules From By-Gone Era

Monday, 16 November, 2009

Canadian Telco Ownership Rules From By-Gone Era

With hindsight, it should have been obvious that the foreign control issue would be the elephant in the room around the government’s efforts to inject greater competition into the Canadian telecom sector. There is little doubt that officials – not to mention Canadian consumers – were anxious to encourage new entrants. While the set-aside in the spectrum auction guaranteed the new entrants, leaving the foreign control rules untouched meant the job was only half-done.

With the Globalive entry into the Canadian market at risk and hundreds of millions in spectrum in limbo, Canadians must ask hard questions about the merits of foreign control restrictions.

The days of retaining Canadian control over physical telecommunications infrastructure connected to millions of homes are over. Wireless networks involve significant investments in cellphone towers, but not direct connectedness into individual homes.

From TIME magazine’s 50 Best inventions in 2009,

Rob Spence, a 37-year-old Canadian filmmaker, sustained permanent damage to his right eye when he was 9. Fast-forward to 2009, when Rob’s quest to regain vision in his right eye takes an unusual spin. With the help of Kosta Grammatis, John Polanski, Martin Ling, Phil Bowen and camera provider OmniVision, he is attempting to replace his prosthetic eye with a battery-powered, wireless video camera, thereby making himself into an “Eyeborg,” with the power to record exactly what he’s looking at as digital video.

Kryptonite bone glue helps open-heart surgery patients

Friday, 13 November, 2009

Dr. Paul FedakDr. Kathryn King

I am happy to hear co-principal investigators Calgary cardiac surgeon Dr. Paul Fedak, MD PhD FRCSC and nurse researcher Dr. Kathryn King, RN PhD have found a way to help open heart surgery patients to recover better and faster using KryptoniteTM adhesive, a biocompatible polymer manufactured by the Connecticut-based Doctors Research Group (US website) (PDF info).

Kryptonite-pix3

Here is an excerpt from the official news release (PDF) (emphasis added),

““We can now heal the breastbone in hours instead of weeks after open-heart surgery. Patients can make a full recovery after surgery and get back to full physical activities in days instead of months,” reports Dr. Paul W.M. Fedak, MD PhD FRCSC, a cardiac surgeon at Foothills Medical Centre and scientist at the Faculty of Medicine who pioneered the new procedure.

Over 20 patients have received the new technique in Calgary as part of a pilot study. Fedak and Kathryn King, RN PhD are the co-principal investigators on the study. King, a cardiovascular nurse scientist, is an expert in post-operative recovery after open-heart surgery. “We know that recovery from sternotomy is a multi-faceted process that includes not only healing of the breastbone but the ability to return to normal activities,” she says. “Being able to resume normal activities is a hallmark of a good recovery; this surgical innovation should enable that.

[...] The encouraging results of this pilot study have prompted the Calgary researchers to establish a worldwide study to further investigate its benefits. The STICK Trial (STernal Innovative Closure with KryptoniteTM) aims to apply the technique in over 500 patients across the globe over the next 12 – 24 months.

[...] KryptoniteTM is approved for use in Canada (Health Canada), USA (FDA), and Europe (CE Mark). This pilot study has been supported in part by Doctor’s Research Group Inc.”

I like to thank Dr. Fedak for sending along the product monograph and his Oct 29, 2009 presentation about Kryptonite (TM). After watching the 30 minutes presentation including Dr. Fedak’s research findings, I now have a deeper understanding of the benefits of Kryptonite to open-heart surgery patients in their healing process. I’ve posted some selected screen captures from the presentation here, here, and here.

The following are some related news plus a link to the patent application of the adhesive.

Note: Here is a link to the patent application “Methods of performing medical procedures which promote bone growth by Dr. Richard Deslauriers, CEO of Doctors Research Group Inc., and other co-inventors.

P.S. As a Calgarian and U of C alum (Haskayne MBA), I am exceedingly proud and excited of Dr. Fedak and Dr. King’s achievements.
