Special 2010/02/14 Update:

Now the Torch relay has completed, the Torch cam has finished its job. All things considered, the Torchcam has done a great job in its first ever operation. There are things to be improved but like any new groundbreaking inventions, there are always room for improvement.

CTV is doing a great job putting up a Live Webcam @ Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay with a Google map show where they are. You can also follow the Torch at Twitter. Check these out, quite cool. Got to see a bit of Canada and where the Torch is traveling.

I’ve blogged more about the live webcast technology in “Dejero Labs – Powering Live Webcast of Olympic Torch Relay“.

P.S. At the end of the day, it is not the about the Olympic flame. It is not about the Olympic Torch. It is not even about the famous Canadian stars and people carrying the Torch. It is about the lovely Canadian towns and cities that the Olympic Flame has traveled to. It is about the Canadian hearts and minds the Olympic spirit has touched. It is about us.

The following are pictures of some Olympic Torchbearers: John Ells, Rodney Helpard, Cia Tweel, Sarah Bryson, Sidney Crosby, and Mallory Sanford on a Zamboni. I’ve also included a video clip of Sidney.

Here is a video of our beloved Sidney Crosby running with the Olympic Torch. (sorry no audio).

CTV has a report with better picture, “Sidney Crosby runs with Olympic flame in Halifax“.

Note 1: The @CTVOtorch Live Webcam went down or became “temporarily unavailable” many times over the live broadcast, including moments during the Sidney Crosby coverage. Now, considering the complexity of this brand new technology, I think it did an admirable job.

Note 2: For the record, the following are some of the Twitter updates @CTVOtorch at the time of me writing this blog entry (the first picture captured at the top of this post) showing who are carrying the Torch and where the Torch is going next, etc. And the status in French too!

Elizabeth Wile is the current flame runner in Elmsdale, N.S.

P.P.S. “Crosby to join Olympic torch run in Halifax“. Sidney is cool but I think the story is the Canadians in big or small places across the country.

P.P.P.S. (Feb 13th, 2010) I am surprised and disappointed my favourite Olympic Champion Donovan Bailey wasn’t asked to carry the torch.

It’s not cool, it’s lame. The live webcam hasn’t worked for days, the maps aren’t being updated. There are no photos or videos from previous days (even though there are prominent buttons on the site announcing such). There hasn’t been a tweet about the torch’s progress for days.

We can get live webcam feeds from Mars and Mount Everest but not from Manitoba?!?

Not a very good showing of Canada’s technical prowess.

  3. kempton says:

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for sharing your comments here.

I am guessing they were off for holidays for a few days.

Now, there are still technical problems to be resolved for sure but remember this is brand new technologies that weren’t possible before at this kind of cost-effective manner. So I give them some room for improvement.

At the same time, I am less generous about why the rights holders haven’t been doing more with previously shoot torch running footage !!!! You may not realize this, I was told that the Olympic sponsors Coke and RBC have the rights to use the footage but they are NOT !!! And CTV’s hands are tied and can’t, for example, create clips of torch running footage for each person and post them.

You see, this will make Canadians (those who carry the torches, their friends and families, and us Canadians who just want to see some of those torch carrying moments) happy. AND even create some additional publicity for these sponsors or whoever hold the rights to reuse the footage.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

P.S. Speaking technically, Mars and Mount Everest have their dedicated satellite connections that are very expensive and making it economically impractical.

Live Webcam and where it? deception

  5. kempton says:

    @edgi

The Live Webcam was in operation for the last few months. Now the Torch relay has completed, the Torch cam has finished its job.

  6. Suzanne says:

If you find out that RBC and Coke are willing to share that webcam footage please send me an email. My father ran on Feb. 11th, torchbearer 160, around 2:30 pm and we would love to have the footage of the very special occasion. Sad to hear that Coke and RBC won’t share footage. Doesn’t seem to be in spirit of the games.

    Thanks!

  7. kempton says:

My understanding is that RBC and Coke have the rights to the footage but they are NOT doing as much with them as they should.

What a great opportunity for Canadians to share these memories with all their friends and relatives. And I think it will be great for RBC and Coke to put their sponsorship message (ad) with these footage too. This is one of those lose-lose moment. Short-sighted for RBC and Coke.

The problem is not enough Canadian torchbearers complain, I think. If enough people complain, may be RBC and Coke will do something different???

  8. Heather Cathcart says:

My husband was a torchbearer in Chilliwack, BC on day 101 and I would love to have the footage of him if it is possible. He was with RBC. Is there any way to get video footage of my husband. He ran around 12:40.

  9. kempton says:

    Hi Heather,

    See my comments above.

Again I doubt RBC and Coke will do much but one should never underestimate a large group of complaining Canadians. :)

  10. Linda says:

actually your blog is one of those i will bother to revisit. most i saw today are full of useless informations and advertising. thank you for providing some real content to the world :)
