Beijing Olympics: Dear Usain Bolt – World Fastest Man

Dear Usain,

After the fun I had in writing “Dear Michael Phelps”, I am writing a letter to you as well. It gives me an excuse to pretend to give you some advices and allow me a chance to think through a few issues.

Now, just like Michael’s agent Peter Carlisle (of Octagon) is working hard for him, I am sure your agent Ricky Simms (London’s Pace Sports Management) is working in overdrive to arrange deals for you.

Here are a few random thoughts (including some China-related) that fits a blog entry and may be useful to you and of interest to my readers (as a thought exercise).

  1. You seemed like a marketing and advertising natural to me. I love the pictures you posted with your shoes here and here. And I am sure your sponsor love you even more. Those publicity is priceless. (note: some people may think that as too much “hard sell”, I am ok with it.)
  2. You are quite smart in thinking like this as I previously commented, “Better to break it smaller than bigger, I would say,” he said. “[Then] you have a next time to break it.”
  3. Because of your natural talent, you can be relaxed and breaking world record at the same time. I think it is important for you to keep having fun and I think most audiences will have fun with you too.
  4. Now, about China. I hope and wish you get some good deals negotiated. The Chinese must be real proud that a world record 100m speed was set at the Beijing Olympics. At the same time, I am not certain how much will it translate to RMBs or bucks in China? I am interested to see how you do in China.

Congrats,

Kempton

P.S. Have I told you that I like you more than Michael? (big smile)

P.P.S. Here is a great CBC news item “Big money for athlete managers“.

Nike would definitely pounce on a marketing opportunity with Usain Bolt. Too bad Jamaica wears Puma. And too bad Tyson Gay didn’t pull through for Nike or the US.

If Usain Bolt was American, I think the publicity from him combined with Michael Phelps would just be too much. Michael Phelps has been all over the news and TV set, but now it’s finally beginning to subside. Thankfully.

Also in response 2, I think he should’ve shattered the 100m world record, in case something happens and he can’t run again.
Even if he broke the record, Usain Bolt is still reaching his prime, and he could always break it again.

I don’t know if drug speculation would be better or worse if he ran his hardest though.

Thanks for your two comments. Lets hope Bolt stay healthy for a long time to come as he has so much potential and room for improvement as Donovan Bailey suggested (and they are good friends).

P.S. We never know how sponsorship will change over the years. Plus, whoever is using Bolt right now may be very willing to pay a lot more. :)
