17 July, 2008 Update: More coverage here, here, and here.
*******
After my brief conference coverage yesterday, I finally connected with Dr. Heiwai Tang, one of the conference participants, and conducted a Chinese and then an English interview with him over the phone this morning.
We first talked briefly about the paper “Ownership biases in China: An empirical test” by Heiwai and his co-author Dr. Yasheng Huang and we also talked about Heiwai’s conference experiences in some length. By the way, I planned an interview with Yasheng but somehow I was unable to reach him. (Unfortunately, repeated phone calls and emails to Yasheng were not returned nor replied.)
If you understand both English and Cantonese, I recommend you listen to both versions as I asked slightly different questions in the two interviews and I was also rushing the English interview to allow Heiwai enough time to attend the conference on time.
Here are links to my Chinese (Cantonese dialect) audio interview with Heiwai and my English interview with him.
Heiwai, thank you very much for an interesting chat.
P.S. It is interesting to hear about the leading firm-level research that Yasheng and Heiwai are doing for their research paper. Who would think that foreign firms (FDI, Foreign Direct Investment) are paying 3-4% less in VAT (Value Added Tax)?
P.P.S. As an admirer of Prof. Ronald Coase, it is wonderful to hear from Heiwai that Prof. Coase’s mind is still very sharp at the conference (at the young age of 97). If you have time, I highly recommend watching Prof. Coase demonstrating his funny and sharp witted side in this 2003 Coase Centennial Speech which I previous blogged about here.
