CFCN TV reports Fair Copyright for Canada rally in Calgary

First of all, it is great to see CFCN (a CTV local affiliate) be interested in reporting the rally. Thanks CFCN. Now, since we are discussing a Copyright bill, I want to state the following clearly so that I can feel better in reposting the news item onto YouTube and hopefully won’t get DMCAed or receive a “DMCA Take down notice” like one of our questioner in Calgary.

CFCN (CTV) reporting of Fair Copyright for Canada rally in Calgary (a discussion)

I am posting this CFCN news report item (where I have been interviewed) for the purpose of research, criticism, review and news reporting. I believe that, to the best of my knowledge, these rights are available to me under the 2004 ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada in CCH Canadian Ltd. v. Law Society of Upper Canada.

I also believe that all legal disputes, if there are any, should be governed by the laws of Alberta, Canada since the videos were shot in Calgary, Alberta and the TV channel CFCN is based in Calgary, Alberta.

Here is the CFCN TV report of the Fair Copyright for Canada rally in Calgary.

I think CFCN news report represents one of our concerns correctly that the piece of legislation was drafted without consulting with Canadians. At the same time, I think CFCN news lets Minister Jim Prentice off the hook too easily as if the fact we haven’t seen the soon-to-be-tabled Copyright legislation is sufficient to ignore Canadians’ mounting concern given what we have read and heard. Hey Minister, may be we are not as smart as you, but we are not exactly dumb either. (smile)

If the not-so-new Canadian government is going to be kowtowing to the US government and US interest groups by having full consultation sessions with the likes of US Ambassador, US lobby groups (e.g. RIAA) representing US CEOs and their companies’ interests, may be it is time for us Canadians to apply for US citizenships so that we will be able to vote in the next US elections because they are the one calling the shoots in Canada, right?

After all, if our Canadian federal minister don’t want to answer our questions but will gladly consult with the powerhouses in the US, may be we are simply barking at the wrong tree. Many be the Canadian government will simply do what the US government and interest groups want anyway? Hmmmm …

By the way, I love the nice touch of the TV news anchor saying Jim invited us to his party. Just to add a positive spin on things. This is news editing and positioning at its best. You see, the minister basically stoned walling the questions and concerns raised by the gathered crowd by doing what politicians do best – making a lot of sound from his/her mouth but without saying anything meaningful.

And on that note, feel free to check out this funny clip of a favorite minister of mine. I have watched how this minister (who later became Prime Minister!) worked for years and just love him so much. Highly recommended. And the Calgary Public Library has the full DVD collection available!

If you have a remote chance to talk to any Ministers or Prime Ministers in the near or distant future, then I recommend you watch the whole DVD series from the library and be prepared for the fun when your real life Ministers or Prime Ministers sound awfully like the TV ones! Well done Kempton! Very proud of you, as a fellow Canadian, and fellow concerned citizen. It is with coverage like this, where we calmly present the case for a “FAIR” copyright that we’ll get some real headway. Thanks for speaking for me and my family who are in Ottawa! Wish I could have been there (and yes did call in my regrets to his Hill office)!

Thanks a lot Deb for your kind words and for calling to Minister Prentice’s Hill office. We have both done our small parts and should be proud of ourselves in a small way.

    Best Regards,
    Kempton
