Here is another article from my Chinese monthly newspaper column about “user generated media” (自製傳媒). In this issue, I talk about about YouTube and how was it used (or not used) in Hong Kong politics.

再談 YouTube (originally published in Apr 2007)
筆者於數期以前跟大家談過了 YouTube的力量。其實YouTube自己本身亦有很大的存在問題。起因之一是2006年10月時 Google以16.5億美元買下YouTube而種下的。跟世事一樣，YouTube今天的法律問題亦是因為它有了Google的錢而來的。 Viacom以網民上載大量Viacom有版權的短片為理由而告YouTube，更要求10億美元的保償。我認為Viacom以10億之數來告官，其實是 有點用來跟YouTube談判之用的。
好了，YouTube 10億美元的官非不談了。兩個月前我於「新政治革命工具」一文中提到「電視帶來了上一次大轉變，我深信這些網上新傳媒工具亦會被新一代的政客用來作為他們政治革命的工具。」
首 先讓我談點正面的發展。早前我想在網上找香港特首候選人答問大會的短片來看，我花了點時間後終在香港電台找到，但收看之下，它的畫面其差。我再花 點 時間後，便在YouTube上找到其他用戶上載的答問大會片段，而其畫面便較香港電台正式的短片更佳及更順利。這證明只要有一個有心人上載一些「有用」的 短片，其他人(遠至我們在加拿大的人)亦可以收看。
另因為現代的攝錄工具細小方便 (小至電話亦可以錄聲及像)，所以YouTube上亦多了市民於街上拍的短片，而各政治人物亦相對地小心自己的一舉一動。
正面的談完了，其實還有很多可以改進的地方。我以「梁家傑」尋找到79個短片，我便看不到他有那一個短片是自己正式上載的。這種完全處於被動的做法 我 是不太支持的。可以自己發動的事，為何要完全處於被動的地方呢？而我在YouTube上亦尋找到103個用「曾蔭權」三字tag的短片，其中亦看不到有其 他官方上載的短片。
YouTube其實已開始為另一個網上香港政治及娛樂新聞短片的發放地點，這其實是件好事，不知中國大陸使用YouTube的情形是怎樣？請讀者來電郵指教。

中國也有一個這樣的網站叫’土豆網’ (tudou.cn). 全都是簡體字,不過土豆有滿豐富的選擇,有很多電影, 就像星球大战全集, 冒牌天神, 等等. 超讚!

Yes, 冒牌天神 is Bruce Almighty, and 星球大战全集 is all the Star Wars movies back to back. I made mistake with the link though. It should be:

As for Hollywood getting to them, I wouldn’t count on it happening soon. 百度 is still getting a huge portion of its users due to its MP3 feature, and since they had the most successful IPO in US Nasdaq history, there’s no way the RIAA doesn’t know about them. In fact, 百度 has steadily been taking market share from Google.

I see your point, Hollywood and RIAA probably knows about these. The interesting part is what will they do or how will Chinese companies like tudou react? Afterall, China with her entry to WTO, does claim to want to start protect IPR.
