Doing more to stop the Darfur Genocide

We can and need to do more to stop the genocide in Darfur. And troubles are spreading to Chad. Collectively, we have the power to influence our governments and we to do more before it is too late.

I wrote the following badly written email a few days ago to the Canadian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. (email addresses: pm@pm.gc.ca min.dfaitmaeci@international.gc.ca ) And you can write a short email of your own too. As reported by Jeff Jarvis, New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof is asking his readers to “remix” his research materials to bring attention to the spread of the genocide in Darfur.

Dear Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs,

It pains me to see the genocide in Darfur doesn’t have any sign of stopping and it is spreading to Chad. Ultimately the tragedy of the genocide will remain with Canadians forever and we will ask in the future, “Why didn’t we do more when we could?” And as the current leaders of the government of Canada, you need to do more and do more openly. And you are not doing this alone, you are doing to on behalf of us all.

It saddens me to not see the Israeli government do more because the Jews were the ones suffered greatly from genocide in the last century. Regardless of what the Israeli or other governments do or don’t do, we Canadians need to do more to stop the genocide and the atrocity of displacing millions from their home.

We are all humans and we can only try our best, but I think we need to try harder before it is too late. On this note, may I wish you both happy holidays and a more effective 2007.

Yours truly,
Kempton Lam
