Nov 2nd update: My analysis here have been completely faulty. Please see my apology here.
Nov 1st update: new data.
Oct 31st update: Adweek has a new piece today. And I excerpt a part of it here,
“The letter requested that YouTube remove some Viacom proprietary content that had been posted by users, including episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
That letter led YouTube to scramble to remove several videos over the weekend, according to officials.
Now, according to a Viacom representative, the two companies are exploring ways to ensure such problems will not be repeated. As a result, YouTube has re-posted an undisclosed number of Viacom-produced videos.
As of Tuesday, a variety of short clips from the Daily Show, Colbert Report, South Park, Laguna Beach and SpongeBob SquarePants could all be accessed on the site.“

I never thought Comedy Central or other large broadcasters will really go ahead to request their videos to be taken down from YouTube but I am getting dangerously close to eating my words now. If I am going to eat my words, I want to see some hard data before I do it. (sad face)
Here is a very imprecise way to keep track of the progress of Comedy Central video clips take down. The measurements are simple, I will simply search for the following terms every few hours and record the progress or changes in this post.
- “Jon Stewart” YouTube search (JS)
- “Colbert Report” YouTube search (CR)
- “Comedy Central” YouTube search (CC)
By the way, as far as I have read, one video clip (a Jon Stewart interview of Steve Wozniak) has been removed as per DMCA claim reported here. I would like to know of other specific instances. What are some other specific cases? I am also interested in the dynamics between the bloggers and Comedy Central (and its parent Viacom). This take down has been reported by Steve and John.

Thanks for your interesting posts. Noticed that YouTube has just changed its logo?

Hi Andrei,
Thanks for your complement. By changing logo, do you meant putting “Broadcast” on top of “Yourself” as oppose to the two words in one line?
Cheers,
Kempton
[...] I was very wrong in my analysis on the Comedy Central/Viacom DMCA video take down on YouTube thing. I am sorry. And my previous statistical analysis was wrong too! The errors come from me unwittingly assumed search results returned by YouTube were valid links when they were not. I accept responsibility of my mistakes. [...]
